COOL SUMMER

SESSION POSSIBILITIES

SPECIAL 3-DAY CLASSES and WORKSHOPS

CLAY-ALL-DAY 3-days, 21 hours, May 27th, 28th & 29th, (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday) 1:00pm to 4:30pm and/or 6:00 to 9:30pm. Cost: $150 for each 10.5 hr period, $250 for both Afternoon and Evening. All instruction, tools, materials, 25 pounds of clay and one bisque firing included. This is clay-play time; from figures to vases to garden sculpture, no experience necessary for this chance to make anything in clay. During the afternoon and/or the evening, learn the basic ceramic techniques and create a new piece, or experiment with a new idea, or work on an older piece with glaze, patina and repairs; this is the time to have fun and get your hands in the mud.

SAND CASTING WORKSHOP 3-days, 10.5 hours, June 3rd thru 5t h (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday), 6:00pm to 9:30pm. Cost: $175, all tools, materials (the bonded sand and aluminum) are included. During this 3-evening workshop students will experiment with aluminum sand casting and end with a finished sculpture. The first class will begin by designing a sculpture, then carving a detailed negative pattern in bonded sand. During the second meeting we pour molten aluminum into the molds and remove the sand mold. The last evening is spent finishing the piece.


GARDEN SCULPTURE 3-days, 10.5 hours, June 10th thru June 12th (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday), 6:00pm to 9:30pm. Cost: $175. All tools, materials and supplies are included. During this class, you will create a permanent outdoor sculptural piece in just 3 days. First we make a small scale model, then cast a cement mixture in a plastic container to create the ‘stone’ you want. Carve it while it is still soft with simple hand tools. Easy, fun, anyone can do it! Make sculptured planters, birdbaths, lanterns, fountains. No experience necessary. Wear old clothing and bring rubber gloves.


FIGURE SCULPTING FOR THE BUSY 2-days, 12 hours, June 10th and 11th (Tuesday & Wednesday), 10:00am to 5:00pm. Costs: $175. Most tools, models fees, clay and the bisque firing are included. This very intensive workshop is designed for busy artists who want to sculpt from a live model. Working in water-based clay each participant will develop a reclining figure sculpture up to 18 inches. The first hour is devoted to gesture and form, from that point we create base and size; in the afternoon shape and proportion. Day-2 is surface anatomy, details and finish. Spaces in this workshop are limited; please pre-register with a 50% deposit.

USING PLASTER TO CREATE SCULPTURE WORKSHOP 3-days, 18-hours, June 17th thru 19th (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday), 10:00am to 5:00pm. Cost: $250. Workspace, tools, materials and supplies provided. Discover a classic method for creating large, semi-permanent sculptures. During this class students will learn the process of building armatures with wood, steel and expanded metal lath (mesh), then covering it with burlap and plaster. This is both an additive and subtractive method that is inexpensive and easy to use; giving the sculptor an ability to generate large works that can be adapted for outside use. Each student will create one medium sized piece from their imagination, then color and seal it.

PLASTER WASTE MOLDS 3-days, 10.5 hrs. June 17th thru 19th (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday), 6:00 to 9:30pm. Cost $150, all tools, materials and supplies included. In this evening workshop, learn the technique for making a one-use, plaster waste mold from a clay model. During the first class, create an original high relief sculpture. The next day, make the waste mold. During the final class, lay in hydrocal, remove the mold, then finish and patina the piece.

MAKE-A-MOBILE WORKSHOP 3-days, 10.5 hours, June 24th thru 26th (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday), 6:00pm to 9:30pm. Cost: $150. All instruction, tools, materials and supplies are provided. This class is a real balancing act! A delightful 3-day workshop teaches you how to create your own mobile or wind-chime that glides, swings and dances in the slightest breeze. Using easily manipulated materials (aluminum, copper and plastic) this hands-on workshop opens a window for your creative powers to soar through. At the end of the class you’ll have one completed, colorful mobile suitable to hang inside or outside.

WEEKLY SUMMER SCULPTURAL OPPORTUNITIES

WEEKLY OPEN STUDIO Saturday: 11:00am to 5:00pm Costs: $100 per/month. Most basic tools are available for all mediums. Work at your own pace with minimal supervision in the company of other sculptors. This Sculptor’s workspace is available for ceramics, wood, stone, plaster, plastics, mold making and metal casting. Drop in and work in wax-for-bronze, or molds, create a new series in plaster or clay, finish something you began or experiment with a different material. This is an opportunity to use a fully equipped studio.

BRONZE CASTING This is a continuous opportunity to cast medium sized bronzes inexpensively. A prerequisite is a previous Atelier 3-D bronze casting class or another casting course. Enroll in our Open Studio, then work at your own pace to make a wax, sprue, vent and investing your piece(s). Some wax, the sprues/vents and tools are available for use; you will have to provide a metal casting canister. Alginate, hyrdocal, sand and plaster are available at cost plus handling. We will burn it out and cast it for $10 a pound over the cost of the bronze. Chasing tools and patinas are available during Open Studio. Typically a 10 pound finished bronze will cost $150 to $200 (depending on its complexity); this does not include the Open Studio time.

One Day Studio Time: $15 for minimum 3-hours. Firings: $60 for full kiln, $35 for half kiln & $10 per piece. Clay: $25 per 50# box. Glaze: $15 per pint. Plaster: $20 per 50# bag Alginate: $15 per lb. Investment Wax: $5 per pound. 60 grit Sand: $10 per 50# bag.

Great Saturday Short Courses

WIRED LINES IN SPACE: 3-hours May 31st and June 7th, 10:00am to 1:00pm, June 21st 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Cost: $45. All tools and supplies are provided. Keep yourself wired yet grounded. Create your personal expression in easily manipulated materials; this one evening, 3-hour class opens the possibilities of making sculpture anywhere at anytime with almost anything. A hands-on experience: binding, twisting and shaping wire. Develop sculptural ideas that can be translated into larger pieces, or transformed into other materials. At the end of this class you’ll have one finished piece, complete with a base. Bring $5 for hand-outs.

HANDS-ON CLAY: 3-hours May 31st and June 7th, 2:00pm to 5:00pm, June 21st 2:00pm to 5:00pm Cost $45. All materials, tools are provided, Slap, push, press and squeeze, these are the fundamentals of ceramics. This is an afternoon of making clay sculpture. In this very hands-on, 3-hour class, each student will create at least one ceramic sculpture, as well as learn some basic information about clay-bodies, ceramic tools and kilns. This workshop is an introduction to the ancient, yet very modern, craft. Working with a water-based clay, using slabs, coils and pinches of clay, every participant will experience making shapes of their choice in this user friendly media. Please bring $5 for the hand-outs. Firing is available for a small fee.

ALGINATE HAND CASTING: 3-hours June 14th, and June 28th, 10 to 1:00pm and August 2nd 10:00am to 1:00pm Costs $45. Tools, materials and supplies provided. This fun, user-friendly class is an excellent opportunity to learn to use the safe, soft molding material, alginate. Each participant will take a mold of their own hand and cast it in hydro-stone, experiencing a method for creating art forms. These hands will be exact replicas, to the smallest detail. Wear old clothing and be prepared to laugh. Bring $5 for hand-outs.

PLASTER FACE CASTS: 3-hours June 14th, and June 28th, 2:00pm to 5:00pm, and August 2nd, 2:00pm to 5:00pm Costs: $45. Tools, materials and supplies provided. Here everyone will make castings of each others face using plaster gauze for a realistic wall hung sculpture. Bring your friend as a partner, or team up with another student for this exciting and interesting course. Wear old clothing and bring a hair tie-back, you will get messy. Please bring $5 for the hand-outs.

Make-A-Mobile 6-hours Saturday August 9th, 10:00am to 5:00pm Costs: $90 with an additional $15 fee for materials and supplies. A balancing act for 6-hours; this delightful workshop teaches you how to create your own mobile or wind-chime that glides, swings and dances in the slightest breeze. Using easily manipulated materials (aluminum, copper and plastic) this one-day, hands-on workshop, opens a window for your creative powers to soar through. At the end of the session you’ll have one completed, colorful mobile suitable to hang in or outside. The instruction and all the tools are provided; wear old clothing. Come prepared to have a great day with coffee/tea & donuts and a lunch break from 1-2pm.

Please Note: Due to the difficulties in preparing materials, supplies and scheduling models for classes, it has become necessary to request a one week advance notification and pre-registration for every class. Except for one-day Open Studio times there will be a 10% Late Registration fee.
